Battle of Edington


On 6 May 878, the Battle of Edington took place between Alfred the Great’s West Saxon army and an invading Viking army of Guthrum the Old. According to his biographer Asser, Alfred “overthrew the pagans with great slaughter, and smiting the fugitives, he pursued them as far as the fortress”, ending the battle in a decisive victory.
