William Gargan
William Gargan, 1906-1979, prolific actor with 106 credits between 1929 and 1962 including TV. Second lead or supporting and in 1941, he was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for "They Knew What They Wanted". He's known for "Rain 1932, "The Animal Kingdom" 1932, "Sweepings" 1933, "The Story of Temple Drake" 1933, "Night Flight" 1933, "Four Frightened People" 1934, "British Agent" 1934, "Black Fury" 1935, as well as for playing fictional detectives Ellery Queen, Martin Kane, and Barrie Craig on radio movies and television. He lost his larynx due to throat cancer in 1960 and he was only able to speak through an artificial voice box. He became a spokesman for the American Cancer Society warning people about the dangers of smoking. He suffered a fatal heart attack on a flight from New York to San Diego. He was 73.
