Almourol Castle

The Almourol Castle (Castelo de Almourol) is one of the most scenic and romantic of Portugal's medieval castles, situated as it is on an island in the middle of the Tejo River.
Almourol lies on the River Tejo, once the border between Christian and Islamic Portugal during the period of the Reconquista (the reconquest of Portugal from the Moors by the Christian Portuguese and their allies).
Almourol was taken by Christian knights in 1129 and given to Gualdim Pais, the leader of the Knights Templar in Portugal, who rebuilt it. He also built the equally spectacular Convento de Cristo in nearby Tomar.
