Sally Starr
Sally Starr was born January 23, 1909 in Pittsburgh, PA -May 5, 1996 South Park Township Allegheny County, PA. Starr worked in "George White Scandals" announcing the scenes and thanking the audience. Then Gus Edwards caught her singing and dancing in a Los Angeles Revue. Edwards introduced Sally to Sam Wood who cast her in "So, Rhis is College" opposite Robert Montgomery and Elliott Nugent. She was promoted as a peppy brown haired girl who took the bus to and from the studio daily.Her Her brown hair and eyes, five foot 104 pound frame lead Photoplay dubbing her a "vest pocket edition of Clara Bow. She had tried movies before and appeared in four melodramas in 1917 and 1918 but now they yalked!."So, This is College" did well and she was put in a short subject with Cliff Edwards, "The Flower Garden"and subsequently, 13 of her 24 films between 1929 and 1928 were short subjects but the money was good. In 1930 she was in "The Woman Racket" with Tom Moore and Blanche Sweet. Then she worked with King Vidor, Marion Davies, Elliott Nugent, and Raymond Hackett in "Not So Dumb".She was loaned to Columbia for the top role in a comedy called "Personality", but at MGM her part in the William Haines film, "The Girl Said No," was uncredited and a bit part as Kay Willow. She was ninth billed in Helen Twelvetrees' "Swing High" at Pathe where she was second billed as Mary to Eddie Quillan's Willie in "Night Work" At Columbia, she was second billed in, "For the Love O Lil" with Jack Mulhall, Elliott Nugent, and Margaret Livingston. She received top billing over Tom Keene in "Pardon My Gun" and after not making any films in 1931 and a short subject on Hollywood beauty in 1932, she was cast sixth in an independent movie with Mary Carlisle, Buster Crabbe, and Charles Starrett called "The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi" then "In the Money" at the Mack Sennet lot but for Invincible Pictires Corporation. It starred Richard Skeets Gallagher, Lois Wilson, Warren Hymer before Sally. Her next nine films were all short subjects and the companies varied. Sally left films and returned to her home state. She was living in South Park Township, Allegheny County, PA when on May 5, 1996, she suffered a fatal heat attack. She was 87.
