☞Today in Old-West History -- On the date 154 years ago, Monday, May 10, 1869, the ceremonial final spike, made of gold, was driven by noted American industrialist tycoon Leland Stanford (1824-1893), co-founder of Stanford University, to join the rails of the Eastern & Western portions of the first Transcontinental Railroad across the United States -- connecting the Central Pacific & the Union Pacific railroads at Promontory Summit in Utah Territory.
☞The photograph depicts an 1881 painting entitled “The Last Spike” by noted American artist Thomas Hill (1829-1908). The painting, which depicts the ceremonial driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory Summit in Utah Territory, was on display in the rotunda of the California State Capitol for many years, & is now in the collection of the California State Railroad Museum at Sacramento.
