Jackie Coogan
Jackie Coogan was prforming with his parents on the stage at age 4. He was born in LA on October 26, 1914 to a father who was a dancer and a mother who had been a child star. Charlie Chaplin spotted him and cast him in "A Day's Pleasure" in 1919 proving he had screen charisma. Chaplin meticulously planned "The Kid" 1921 which teamed him with Coogan and it was an enormous success and is regarded as one of Chaplin's greatest works. Coogan had a successful film career under contract to First Nationl (Before it became Warner Brothers) and then MGM. He starred in "Tom Sawyer" in 1930 and "Huckleberry Finn" 1931 for Paramount but he was growing up. His father died and his mother married his manager, and Jackie was denied the money he had earned as a child. Coogan, now married to Betty Grable, was awarded $126,000 in 1939 when he asked for $4 million. The California Legislature passed the Child Actors Bill, also known as the Coogan Act Coogan and Grable divorced in 1940 and he married three more times and fathered 4 children. Jackie Coogan has been steadily employed in films and television and other than "The Kid" in 1921, he is best remembered as Uncle Fester on "The Addams Family" 1964-1966. He died of a heart attack in 1984.
