Ben-Hur (1959)
Charlton Heston in Ben-Hur (1959)After a Jewish prince is betrayed and sent into slavery by a Roman friend in 1st-century Jerusalem, he regains his freedom and comes back for revenge.
MGM was going broke when Ben-Hur was being made. They put all their last monies for the production and made it known to producer Sam Zimbalist that the film better be a big hit. The pressure was so intense that Zimbalist died in Italy during the making of the film. Director William Wyler took on the producing duties along with the gigantic job of directing the film. The movie was a huge hit for MGM and the profits helped the studio sustained itself for a few more years. In 1969 a major chunk of the studio was purchased by Kirk Kerkorian. He then began selling off the MGM assets.
