The 31st Academy Awards ceremony was held on April 6, 1959, at the Pantages Theater, in Hollywood, to honor the best films of 1958. The night was dominated by Gigi, which won nine Oscars, breaking the previous record of eight set by Gone with the Wind and tied by From Here to Eternity and On the Waterfront.
"Gigi" won the Oscar for Best Picture winning over "Auntie Mame", "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", "The Defiant Ones", "Separate Tables".
Susan Hayward won Best Actress for "I Want to Live" over Deborah Kerr "Separate Tables", Shirley MacLaine "Some Came Running", Rosalind Russell "Auntie Mame", Elizabeth Taylor "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof".
Burl Ives won Best Supporting Actor for "The Big Country" over Theodore Bikel "The Defiant Ones", Lee J. Cobb "The Brothers Karamazov", Arthur Kennedy "Some Came Running", Gig Young "Teacher's Pet".
Wendy Hiller won Best Supporting Actress for "Separate Tables" over Peggy Cass "Auntie Mame", Martha Hyer "Some Came Running", Maureen Stapleton "Lonelyhearts", Cara Williams "The Defiant Ones"
