The 29th Academy Awards


The 29th Academy Awards were held on March 27, 1957, to honor the films of 1956 at the RKO Pantages Theater. This year, Best International Feature Film became a competitive category, having been given as a Special Achievement Award since 1947. "Around the World in 80 Days" Mike Todd won Best Picture over "Friendly Persuasion" William Wyler, "Giant" George Stevens, "The King and I" Charles Brackett, "The Ten Commandments" Cecil B. DeMille. George Stevens won Best Director for "Giant" over Michael Anderson "Around the World in 80 Days", William Wyler "Friendly Persuasion" Walter Lang "The King and I", King Vidor "War and Peace". Yul Brynner won Best Actor for "The King and I" over James Dean "Giant", Kirk Douglas "Lust for Life", Rock Hudson "Giant", Laurence Olivier "Richard III". Ingrid Bergman won Best Actress for "Anastasia" over Carroll Baker "Baby Doll", Katharine Hepburn "The Rainmaker", Nancy Kelly "The Bad Seed", "Deborah Kerr "The King and I". Anthony Quinn won Best Supporting Actor for "Lust for Life" over Don Murray "Bus Stop", Anthony Perkins "Friendly Persuasion", Mickey Rooney "The Bold and the Brave", Robert Stack "Written on the Wind". Dorothy Malone won Best Supporting Actress for "Written on the Wind" over Mildred Dunnock "Baby Doll", Eileen Heckart "The Bad Seed", Mercedes McCambridge "Giant", Patty McCormack "The Bad Seed". Winners Anthony Quinn, Dorothy Malone, Yul Brynner, and Cary Grant who accepted for Ingrid Bergman
