Anna Maria von Stockhausen
ANNA MARIA VON STOCKHAUSEN
Not much can be found on the life of Anna Maria von Stockhausen.
What is known however, in February 1775, Anna Maria von Stockhausen was arrested on suspicion of practicing Satanism, a charge that would lead to her tragic end.
Despite pleading her innocence, she was found guilty and sentenced to death by bEheading.
On the day of her scheduled execution, the executioner who was supposed to carry out the sentence suddenly refused, reportedly claiming that he was unable to execute someone who was innocent.
This twist of fate spared Anna Maria’s life, but not her reputation or her freedom.
She was imprisoned for six more years until her death in 1781, under mysterious circumstances in Kemptem, Bavaria.
After her death, Anna Maria was bound by chains to prevent her from rising from the grave, a common practice during that time to prevent alleged witches from coming back to life.
It’s a haunting reminder of the injustices and superstitions of the past, that led to the persecution of countless individuals, most of them women, accused for witchcraft.
