BUTTERFLIES ARE FREE

 "BUTTERFLIES ARE FREE" --- (1972)

This romantic comedy film is based on the 1969 play by Leonard Gershe, who adapted it for the screen. Goldie Hawn and Edward Albert starred. Eileen Heckart received an Academy Award ("Best Supporting Actress") for her performance. A young Paul Michael Glaser (credited as just Michael Glaser) had a small, but pivotal, role. It was nominated for 3 Academy Awards, with Heckert winning one of them. It was also nominated for 5 Golden Globe Awards, with Edward Albert winning, the only one received, for "Most Promising Newcomer." It also received a nomination from The Writers Guild of America. While the original play was set in East Village, Manhattan, the screenplay written for the 1972 film was set in the 1355, 1355A, 1357, 1359 Grant Avenue building in North Beach, San Francisco. It is a very sweet film and quite enjoyable. Its storyline is unique, and the material is handled well.
SYNOPSIS: "In early 1970s San Francisco, blind aspiring singer-songwriter Don Baker (Edward Albert) is living away from his overprotective mother (Eileen Heckart) for the first time. Free-spirited actress Jill Tanner (Goldie Hawn) moves into the apartment next door, and they bond over music and literature, but when Don's mother makes an unexpected visit, she clashes with the headstrong Jill, assuming that she'll get bored and leave Don, just as his last girlfriend did."
