Brigham Young

.
He was the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1847 until his death in 1877 and is often known as the "American Moses" or the "Modern Moses" because of his role in leading the Latter-day Saints to Utah.

Among his many achievements, Brigham had a tremendous number of wives.
The sheer variety of Brigham Young's marriages makes it difficult to make sense of them.
He married single women and widows, he also married women who were already married to Mormon men in good standing.

Two months later, Young proposed marriage to a 17-year-old British Mormon named Martha Brotherton who had recently arrived in Illinois.
She turned him down and signed an affidavit denouncing his behavior.
Nevertheless, in June Young proposed to a second woman, who accepted him.

Instead, Brigham sought a second wife because president of Joseph Smith, the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, instructed him that plural marriage was a divine commandment.
This would bring a select number of righteous men, tremendous blessings for eternity.
Once Brigham accepted it, however, he accepted it wholeheartedly.

After the murder of Joseph Smith, Brigham married around 15 women, and began to have children with several of his wives.
His rate of marriage peaked in early 1846, when he married nearly 20 additional wives in the church's temple.
Shortly thereafter, Brigham Young headed for the American West, bringing with him many of the women who had married him over the previous four years.

When wives demanded divorces, he granted them.
At the same time, he tried dearly to create a harmonious and united family, instructing his wives and children to join him for prayer each day.

Brigham would marry twice more before his death on August 29, 1877, aged 76.
Brigham Young's funeral was held in the Tabernacle with an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 people in attendance.
He is buried on the grounds of the Mormon Pioneer Memorial Monument in the heart of Salt Lake City.
