DAMN YANKEES
"DAMN YANKEES" (1958)
MY THOUGHTS:
This is one of my most favorite musicals! I love everything about it and everyone in it!! (And I will cop to being a HUGE fan of Bob Fosse, which has a LOT to do with how much I love the movie!)
Not only did he do a fantastic job of choreographing this film, but he appears in one of the dance numbers with (his future wife) Gwen Verdon. They are wonderful together, it almost goes without saying, that she is amazing in her own right! That can certainly be said for her portrayal of Lola. The songs are excellent throughout. This movie has everything. It has drama. It has comedy. It has great musical numbers. It has an interesting storyline. And finally, it has a VERY talented cast. You just can't go wrong with this one!
SYNOPSIS:
"Joe Boyd, an aging Washington Senators fan, would sell his soul for the Senators to beat the New York Yankees and win the pennant. Enter Applegate (Ray Walston), who offers to turn Boyd into Joe Hardy (Tab Hunter), a powerful young baseball player, in exchange for his soul. When Boyd agrees, he becomes Hardy and leads the Senators on a winning streak. When he starts to miss his wife, though, and questions the deal, Applegate sends temptress Lola (Gwen Verdon) into the mix."
