Anna Christie
Blanche Sweet 1923 "Anna Christie" directed by John Griffith Wray, based on the Eugene O'Neill play, co-starring George F. Marion, William Russell, and Eugenie Besserer.
Miss Sweet told me herself that O'Neill preferred her portrayal over Garbo's 1930 Talkie debut which was also made in a German language version. Garbo is more mournful and pitiful while Sweet is tougher as Anna would be after her experiences. She was almost cast in the Talkie remake until producers realized it would be good for introducing Garbo to sound films.
