Breaking Bad

Vince Gilligan personally selected Baby Blue by Badfinger to play during the final scene of Breaking Bad, even though several members of the music team initially objected. They felt the song was too on-the-nose and worried its literal lyrics (“Guess I got what I deserved”) might feel heavy-handed. Gilligan disagreed, believing the track perfectly captured Walter White’s twisted sense of accomplishment and finality.

Gilligan later explained that the song wasn’t meant to glorify Walter, but to underline the irony of his ending, he d!es alone, surrounded only by the consequences of his choices.

The emotional impact was immediate and massive. Within hours of the finale’s broadcast on September 29, 2013, Baby Blue was purchased over 5,000 times on iTunes, skyrocketing in sales.

The surge was so dramatic that the song re-entered the Billboard Hot 100, more than 40 years after its original release, peaking higher in 2013 than it ever had in the 1970s.

The finale single-handedly introduced Badfinger to a new generation of listeners and is now widely regarded as one of the most iconic needle-drops in television history, a rare moment where a final song didn’t just end a series, but became part of pop-culture legacy.
