Verwolde castle

Verwolde castle (in Dutch: Huis Verwolde) is a classicist nobleman's house from 1776 on the estate of the same name in the former municipality of Verwolde, northeast of Laren. Verwolde has belonged to Laren since 1854, which in turn belongs to the municipality of Lochem in the Dutch province of Gelderland since 1971. Despite the corner tower, it is not a castle, but more of a stately country house. It is one of the former recognized manors of the Zutphen Quarter.
House Verwolde
History
The earliest written mention dates from 1346 when Derck II van Keppel is listed as the owner of Verwolde. In that year Varenwolde was split off from Keppel by brother division, while it remained a fief of the Heeren van Keppel. Verwolde was probably founded in the 12th century by one of the Lords of Keppel as a hunting lodge because of the rich game environment. In 1182, Wolter I van Keppel is mentioned in connection with Verwolde. Derck III had his own fortified house built on the estate.
Around 1500, the castle became involved in the political struggle between the Heeckerens and Bronckhorsten, with Derck IV supporting the Heeckerens. In 1505 Duke Karel van Guelders took Verwolde Castle because Derck IV van Keppel and Verwolde had broken the oath of loyalty to the duke. Karel used the castle as a defensive fortress on the border with the Oversticht, and placed a cavalryman with twenty men on the house. He had it thoroughly fortified into a castle with moats and ramparts planted with thorn bushes. In 1510 it was attacked by the bishop of Utrecht Frederik van Baden with an army of 1600 horsemen and 300 foot soldiers, during which the castle was demolished, the triple moatswere filled in and the ramparts were demolished.
In the 16th century a new house was built under the Van Keppels. In 1546 the Van Keppel van Verwolde family became extinct in the male line. Verwolde inherited from Frederik van Keppel's only daughter, Cunegonde van Keppel, who was married to Alart (de Cocq) van Haaften. The new castle was built during the Eighty Years' Wartaken by the Spaniards in 1583. A drawing from 1600 of the damaged complex shows that it consisted of a rectangular core surrounded by a polygonal ring wall with wall towers. Archaeological research from 2003 confirmed that the castle had a rectangular main keep of 34 by 37.5 meters, with a retaining wall and a gatehouse, surrounded by two moats. There was also an outer bailey of 17 by 35 meters and a few small buildings. The whole was surrounded by a third moat. In 1658 it came into the possession of the Ripperda family.
May 30, 1738 Evert Jan Benjamin van Goltstein - Verwolde was a fief of Keppel - with the 'house', which was probably just a simple farmer's house at the time, and a third of the verwolde lordship. He bought the house for his daughter Reiniera Charlotta van Goltstein and son-in-law Allard Philip van der Borch, who were borrowed on July 4, 1738. Van der Borch needed it to be registered in the Ridderschap van Zutphen. In 1772 his son and heir, Frederik Wilhelm van der Borch bought the remaining two-thirds of the manor from Assueer Jan Torck (1733-1793), lord of Rosendael. So the glory came into one hand again.
In the following centuries, various renovations took place. In 1775, the then owner of the Verwolde manor, Frederik Willem van der Borch, decided to build a new house. The architect Philip Willem Schonck completed this assignment in nine months. The wallpaper factory of Jan Hendrik Troost van Groenendoelen took care of the decoration of the Chinese room. Schonck also designed the gardens for the estate. In 1926, the owner, Line Baroness van der Borch van Verwolde-Voƻte, Lady of Verwolde (1887-1966), had a large corner tower built, giving the house a castle-like appearance again. The house was also completely modernized that year to the latest requirements of the time. The tower and the renovations were then designed and led by architectural firm Van Nieukerken from The Hague/Gorssel. During the Second World War, she had the tuberculosis sanatorium De Lighallen in The Hague established in the building, in order to avoid its occupation by the occupiers.

Museum
The house was sold in 1977 by Allard baron van der Borch van Verwolde (1926-2008) to the Geldersche Kasteelen Foundation. The former owner moved into the hunting lodge on the estate that same year.
After restorations of, among other things, the precious wallpaper in the Chinese room, the house has been in good condition since April 2012. The Geldersche Kasteelen Foundation has made the castle accessible to the public and given it a museum function. When selling, Allard demanded baron van der Borch van Verwolde to have access to his library at all times. This was kept in the castle, so that it happened more than once that during a tour Allard baron van der Borch van Verwolde was present in the library to work.
The garden and the forest of the estate are open to walkers. The rest is privately owned. Different routes have been set out by means of colored posts that lead past monumental farms. A walk along the "Dikkeboompad" leads past the Dikke Boom, an ancient oak tree.
