Rock Hudson
Rock Hudson, as “Brad Allen”, in the bathtub, on the telephone, on the ‘Party Line’ he shares with Doris Day as “Jan Morrow”, in Michael Gordon’s romantic comedy movie for Universal Pictures, ‘Pillow Talk’ (1959), also starring Tony Randall, Thelma Ritter, the great French actor Marcel Dalio, Nick Adams, and Lee Patrick. This very funny movie was an enormous hit, it deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for its witty script, and it was the first of three comedies that Rock Hudson, Doris Day, and Tony Randall would all appear in together, the next two being Delbert Mann’s ‘Lover Come Back’ (1961), and Canadian director Norman Jewison’s ‘Send Me No Flowers’ (1964). When I was a kid we had a ‘Party Line’ at our lake house, and I remember lamenting that our ‘Party Line’ was not nearly as much fun as the one in this movie.
