What is your favourite movie based on a true story or person? A biopic, an historical recounting, or a fictitious story based on a true story? Mine is the story of "Margo Channing' (pictured on the left), played by Bette Davis, in Joseph L. Mankiewicz's classic movie, 'All About Eve' (1950), who was based on the real life experiences of actress Elisabeth Bergner (pictured on the right).
English actress Elisabeth Bergner (August 22, 1897 – May 12, 1986), is known for being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as "Gemma Jones" in Paul Czinner's British movie drama, 'Escape Me Never' (1935), in which she reprised the same role that she played on both the New York and London stages. It's interesting that Elisabeth Bergner would lose that Academy Award for Best Actress to Bette Davis, who won the award that year for Alfred E. Green's 'Dangerous' (1935), given that fifteen years later Bette Davis would famously play the role of "Margo Channing" in 'All About Eve' that was based on the true life experiences of Elisabeth Bergner.
It was well known by Broadway theatre insiders, and in Broadway critics circles, that Elisabeth Bergner was the inspiration for the character of "Margo Channing". Elisabeth Bergner had a real-life incident about a would-be "Eve Harrington" (played by Anne Baxter in the movie 'All About Eve') when Elisabeth Bergner was performing in the play 'The Two Mrs. Carrolls' (1943) on Broadway. In real life, Bergner helped a young actress, and then the actress "took over" Bergner's life. Bergner recounted the story to the writer Mary Orr, who based a short story 'The Wisdom of Eve' (1946) in Cosmopolitan magazine on Bergner's experience. And it was this short story by Mary Orr that was adapted by Joseph L. Mankiewicz for his movie masterpiece 'All About Eve'.
