THE NIGHT A RAINBOW ROSE FROM THE OCEAN
THE NIGHT A RAINBOW ROSE FROM THE OCEAN
Just after sunset, visitors along Iceland’s black sand beach noticed a strange glow forming at the horizon. Within minutes, a massive arc of color began lifting out of the ocean mist, curving high into the night sky . Waves rolled in quietly, reflecting gold and turquoise across the wet sand while the cliffs stood dark and still beneath the glow.
The phenomenon was caused by a rare combination of sea spray, low sun angle, and lingering moisture in the air after a passing storm. As the last sunlight slipped below the horizon, it refracted through billions of tiny droplets rising from the surf, creating a luminous nighttime rainbow that seemed almost unreal against the volcanic landscape.
Witnesses described the moment as “silent and surreal,” with many unsure whether they were seeing weather, light, or something from another world. The colors slowly faded as darkness took over, leaving only the sound of the tide and a sky full of stars.
