Today, we pause to celebrate Frances Bay, the beloved character actress whose gentle presence, warmth, and understated talent left a lasting mark on film and television. Born in Canada, Bay spent many years performing locally before moving to New York to pursue a career in acting. Her petite stature and soft-spoken demeanor belied a remarkable versatility, allowing her to bring memorable life to elderly characters across multiple decades.Bay became a familiar face to American audiences in the late 1970s, first appearing as Fonzie’s grandmother on Happy Days. She continued to delight viewers with guest roles on iconic TV series such as Murder, She Wrote, Golden Girls, Matlock, and the unforgettable Seinfeld episode where she played Mabel Choate, the woman from whom Jerry Seinfeld stole a loaf of marble rye bread. On the big screen, she charmed audiences as Adam Sandler’s grandmother in Happy Gilmore (1996) and appeared in films including Twins and Big Top Pee-Wee.
Even after a portion of her right leg was amputated in 2002, Bay’s dedication never wavered. She continued acting, with her final role as Aunt Ginny on The Middle. In recognition of her enduring contributions, she was inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame in 2008.
