Don Adams

Don Adams, the beloved actor, comedian, and voice actor whose work left an indelible mark on television comedy. Born Donald James Yarmy in Manhattan, New York City, to a family of Hungarian-Jewish and Irish descent, Adams overcame incredible challenges early in life. During World War II, he served in the United States Marine Corps and was the only member of his platoon to survive the Battle for Guadalcanal, narrowly surviving malaria and blackwater fever before returning to the U.S. to recover.

After the war, Adams pursued comedy and adopted his stage name from his first wife, singer Adelaide Adams. He gained national attention in 1954 by winning an Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts contest, launching a career that spanned television, film, and voice work. Adams is best remembered for his iconic role as Agent Maxwell Smart (Agent 86) in the hit 1960s spy parody series “Get Smart” (1965–1970), earning three Emmy Awards for his performance. His clipped, precise speaking style, inspired by William Powell, became a hallmark of his comedic delivery.

Beyond live action, Adams became the voice behind Tennessee Tuxedo and Inspector Gadget (1983–1986), bringing animated characters to life for a new generation. He also found success directing commercials, earning a Clio Award in 1971. Over the years, Adams appeared in numerous shows, movies, and guest appearances, and despite some later projects failing to capture the magic of Maxwell Smart, his talent and humor remained timeless.

Adams was married three times and fathered seven children, leaving behind a family as rich and vibrant as the characters he portrayed. His legacy endures in laughter, memorable lines, and the joy he brought to audiences worldwide.
