WHEN WE WERE KINGS

 "WHEN WE WERE KINGS" (1996)

Muhamad Ali is a sports legend, who was at the height of his popularity when I was a young girl / teenager. He always fascinated me, and I thought of him as a "hero" in many ways. I would get a really big kick out of watching him "spar" verbally with Howard Cossell. I knew his famous "fly like a butterfly and sting like a bee" motto. I had watched "The Greatest" and of course as did we all, was very familiar with the song by the same name. It was when I moved to Phoenix however, that I learned the most about him as a human. He was very kind, generous and a real part of the community. And, when he started his journey with dementia, he was a brave and noble patient. (We have a hospital wing, that bears his name, and is dedicated to Alzheimer and Dementia research.) So, let's just say, I was very excited when I saw this documentary on the schedule. I enjoyed it VERY much. So did the critics. It won "Best Documentary" at The Academy Awards, which is why it was included on the schedule. It was nominated for 16 additional awards, from various entities, and won 11 of them!
SYNOPSIS: "On October 30, 1974, perhaps the most famous heavyweight championship boxing match of all time took place in Kinshasa, Zaire: the "Rumble in the Jungle" between champion George Foreman and challenger Muhammad Ali. In historical footage and new interviews, this documentary explores the relationship between African-Americans and the African continent during the Black Power era in terms of both popular culture and international politics, including the brutality of then-dictator Mobutu Sese Seko."
