MERRILY WE LIVE
"MERRILY WE LIVE" (1938)
This romantic comedy stars Constance Bennett, Brian Aherne, Billie Burke, Alan Mowbray and Patsy Kelly. They are well-supported by the rest of its ensemble cast. It was marketed as: "It tops 'Topper' by a hundred howls!" They set a high bar there, but they do, in fact, meet it. It was nominated for 5 Academy Awards, one of which was in the Best Supporting Actress category.
I do have a problem with this movie though. It is almost IDENTICAL, in both storyline and characters, to the film "My Man Godfrey" (which was released 2 years BEFORE this film)! I guess you could call it a remake. However, I'm not sure, with only 2 years having passed, that there was any sort of large outcry for that. It is well-done and is worth the watch. But if when you watch it, it starts to seem VERY familiar to you, you now know why that might be.
"SYNOPSIS: "The wealthy Kilbourne family is tired of Mrs. Kilbourne (Billie Burke) hiring ex-convicts as servants. After a servant steals the family's silver, Mrs. Kilbourne agrees to never hire another drifter for help. But when a rough-looking man named Rawlins (Brian Aherne) arrives at her doorstep, she cannot help but hire him as the new chauffeur. As Rawlins catches the eye of their oldest daughter, Jerry (Constance Bennett), the Kilbourne's realize that he may not be the vagrant he claims to be."
