Did you know?
Bhutan has four Queen Mothers- and they're all sisters!
King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who ruled from 1972 until his abdication in 2006, has four wives.
Dorji Wangmo, Tshering Pem, Tshering Yangdon, and Sangay Choden are all sisters, the daughters of Ugyen Dorji, the creator and owner of a private school.
They all married the King and have children with him. Whilst he reigned, they were all titled Queen ("Druk Gyaltsuen") and held equal status.
The interesting thing is that all of his children are simultaneously siblings and cousins, and their stepmothers are their aunts.
When he abdicated in favour of his eldest son with Queen Dorji Wangmo, all of the sisters were given the title "Gyalyum Kude" (Queen Mother), despite only Dorji Wangmo being the King's mother.
In contrast to his father, the current King, Jigme Khesar Namgyel, only has one wife- Jetsun Pema.
