Barbara Baxley
Barbara Baxley (1923–1990), a distinguished actress whose career spanned stage, film, and television. A life member of the Actors Studio, Baxley honed her craft under Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater in New York City. She made her film debut in East of Eden (1955) and quickly became known for her powerful supporting performances. On Broadway, she earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in 1961 for Tennessee Williams’ Period of Adjustment and appeared in notable productions such as Chekhov’s The Three Sisters, Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite, and the musical She Loves Me.Baxley appeared extensively on television in the 1950s through the 1970s, including Perry Mason, Richard Diamond, Private Detective, Have Gun – Will Travel, and daytime soaps like Where the Heart Is and Another World. Her most memorable film roles include Lady Pearl in Robert Altman’s Nashville (1975) and the mother of Sally Field’s character in Norma Rae (1979). She passed away at age 67 from an apparent heart attack at her Manhattan home and is interred at Umpawaug Cemetery in Redding, Connecticut.
