Robert Norman Ross

Robert Norman Ross (1942–1995), the beloved painter, art instructor, and television host known worldwide for The Joy of Painting. Airing from 1983 to 1994 on PBS across the U.S., Canada, Latin America, and Europe, Ross taught viewers the “wet-on-wet” oil painting technique, creating serene landscapes directly from imagination. His calming voice and signature phrases, like “let’s add some happy little trees,” inspired generations of artists and fans, earning him comparisons to Fred Rogers for his gentle, reassuring presence. Over his lifetime, Ross painted an estimated 30,000 works, many now prized at tens of thousands of dollars.

Before fame, Ross served 20 years in the United States Air Force, rising to master sergeant. Stationed in Alaska, he found inspiration in snow-covered mountains and tranquil landscapes, which became recurring motifs in his art. Despite his cheerful persona, Ross battled health issues and died from complications of lymphoma on July 4, 1995, at the age of 52. He is interred at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Gotha, Florida, leaving behind a legacy of creativity, patience, and inspiration.
