Princess of Wales

Today we honor Diana, Princess of Wales (1961–1997), born The Honorable Diana Frances Spencer, a beloved social reformer and British royal whose compassion and courage left a lasting global legacy. The fourth child of Edward John Spencer and Frances Ruth Burke Roche, Diana grew up in an aristocratic English family that had served the crown for generations. After inheriting the title of “Lady” in 1975, she met Prince Charles, and their engagement was announced in February 1981. They married at St. Paul’s Cathedral on July 29, 1981, in a ceremony watched by 750 million people worldwide, and had two sons: Prince William (1982) and Prince Harry (1984).

Beyond her royal duties, Diana redefined humanitarian work. She broke taboos by shaking hands with AIDS patients and comforting leprosy victims, and in her later years, she passionately campaigned against landmines. Known as the “People’s Princess,” her influence extended far beyond fashion and charity. Following her divorce in 1996, she retained the title “Diana, Princess of Wales” and continued her humanitarian efforts. Tragically, she died in a car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997. Memorials in her honor include the Flame of Liberty in Paris and a tribute at Harrods in London.
