Socrates
Socrates was born in Athens, Greece, in 469 BCE and lived during the Golden Age of Athens, a time of outstanding cultural and intellectual achievements. Although Socrates is known as a philosopher, he never actually wrote anything down. Instead, his ideas and teachings were recorded by his students, including Plato and Xenophon.
Socrates was known for his method of questioning, which is now called the Socratic method. This method involves asking questions to help clarify someone's thoughts or beliefs. Socrates believed that wisdom was the most important virtue and that the pursuit of knowledge and truth should be the goal of one's life.
Socrates was sentenced to death by drinking hemlock in 399 BCE for "corrupting the youth" of Athens and "impiety." His death is often seen as a symbol of the struggle between individual conscience and the state's power.
