Peter Ellstrom Deuel

Peter Ellstrom Deuel (February 24, 1940 – December 31, 1971), professionally known as Pete Duel, an American television actor whose promising career reflected both the opportunity and pressure of Hollywood’s studio-driven era. Best remembered for his starring role as outlaw Hannibal Heyes—also known as Joshua Smith—in the popular television series Alias Smith and Jones, Duel became a recognizable face of late-1960s and early-1970s television.

Born into a family connected to the entertainment industry, Duel was the older brother of actor Geoffrey Deuel. He built his professional foundation through steady television work, appearing in comedies such as Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. and dramatic series including Combat!, Bonanza, and Channing. His recurring role as John Cooper on Gidget in 1965 marked a significant career step, showcasing his reliability within ensemble casts and network programming.

Duel continued to expand his television presence with appearances on Ironside, Marcus Welby, M.D., and The Bold Ones. Despite professional success, he struggled privately with alcoholism and personal pressure. On December 31, 1971, Duel died at his Hollywood Hills home at age 31. His death was later ruled a suicide. He is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Penfield, New York, remembered for both his talent and the unfulfilled potential of his career.
