William Henry Harrison
William Henry Harrison was the 9th President of the United States, but he holds the record for having the shortest presidency in American history. He was in office for only 31 days before he died of pneumonia on April 4, 1841. Harrison was the first President to die in office, and his death sparked a constitutional crisis as it was not clear at the time who would succeed him. This crisis was ultimately resolved with the passage of the 25th Amendment to the Constitution in 1967, which established procedures for presidential succession in case of a vacancy in the office.
Harrison was a war hero who gained fame for his role in the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. He led American forces to victory against a Confederacy of Native American tribes led by Tecumseh. Harrison was also a farmer and a slaveholder. He owned several plantations and over 100 enslaved people during his lifetime. However, he publicly expressed opposition to expanding slavery into new territories.
Harrison was known for his love of hard cider, which he used as a symbol of his presidential campaign in 1840. His supporters nicknamed him "Old Tippecanoe" after the battle he fought in, and they used slogans like "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" to rally support for his candidacy.
