Letting go is a strange kind of heartbreak

Letting go is a strange kind of heartbreak.

It feels like standing in a doorway
between two worlds—
one where your dog is still running toward you,
and one where you’re learning how to walk forward
without the sound of their paws behind you.

The world says, “You have to let go.”
But they don’t understand what that means.
They don’t know how your heart argues with itself,
how your hands shake remembering the last warmth of their fur.
They don’t know the way silence suddenly begins to echo.

The truth is…
I never wanted to let go.
Not of your bark,
not of your breath,
not of the way you leaned your whole weight into me
because you trusted me with the deepest parts of your soul.

But love—real love—sometimes asks us
to open our hands
even when everything inside us is begging to hold tighter.
So I let go of your pain.
I let go of your last weary sighs.
I let go of the fight your body couldn’t keep fighting.

And in that moment…
something unexpected happened.
A soft peace curled itself around my grief,
like you were still there,
nuzzling your nose into my palm
the way you always did when I cried.

I realized I wasn’t letting go of you.
I was letting go for you.

Because holding on doesn’t mean clinging to the last day.
It means carrying every good one.
Every car ride.
Every toy.
Every quiet morning when you rested your head on my knee
as if that was your way of saying,
“This is home.”

You’re still here.
In the places light touches.
In the dreams that feel like visits.
In the sudden warmth that fills the room
for no reason at all.

Letting go was a moment.
Holding on…
that’s forever.
