May 12, 1896:
The discovery by Solomon Schechter, the Moldavian/American Judaic scholar and educator, and later a founder of Conservative Judaism and the President of the Jewish Theological Seminary, of a fragment of the Hebrew text of Eccleiastes attracted world-wide attention to the famous Cairo Geniza. Subsequently he rescued thousands of pages of rare Hebrew religious manuscripts and medieval Jewish texts from the Genizah and brought them to Cambridge University. This find revolutionized the study of Medieval Judaism.
