There are steps that fade from floors we still walk

There are steps that fade from floors we still walk— yet somehow, we keep listening for them. A familiar weight padding down the hall that turns your head, a stillness at night that almost sounds like them curling close.

Grief doesn't always announce itself. It's the quiet of a collar left on the hook by the door. It's cold mornings without a warm body pressed against your legs. It's the kind of mark left on your heart that nothing — not time, not winter — can smooth over.

You begin to feel the silence differently. Not simply the missing sounds of them — but the hollow place inside you. Where they made their home. Where they haven't fully left.

Sometimes you catch a flicker — a shape near the window, a movement at the edge of the room. But it's only love doing what it's always done: finding ways to stay breathing in the places it once filled.

And yes, it aches. But it's the kind of ache worth carrying — the kind that says your heart was once a safe place for theirs.

You'll carry them, not in your hands, but in how you slow down for a stranger's dog on the street. In the tenderness in your voice when you say, "I had one once. Just like that."

They didn't take your warmth when they went. They added to it. They made you quieter in the best way. They made you kinder, steadier, more whole.

So grieve it, yes. But hold this too — You were chosen. Chosen to love something so deeply that the missing feels this large. And still able to move through the world with their love walking softly behind you, like prints pressed into new snow. šŸ¾
