"Livin' Large! (1991)"

"Livin' Large! (1991)" is a comedy directed by the legendary Michael Schultz and written by William Mosley-Payne. The film stars Terrence 'T.C.' Carson, Lisa Arrindell, Nathaniel Hall, and Loretta Devine. This movie was filmed in Atlanta, GA, which made this movie slightly different because most Black films were coming out of NYC or L.A. at the time. I view this movie as a time capsule of early 90s culture because Schultz was able to capture it so well, which he has proven to do over time with films like "Car Wash," "Cooley High," and "The Last Dragon."
However, you'll be disappointed if you expect "Livin' Large!" to meet the same quality as the previously named films. The film follows the ambitious Dexter Jackson (TC Carson), who aspires to be a T.V. news reporter. When opportunity strikes, Jackson seizes the moment, and a news station offers him a job. However, Jackson begins to change and lose sight of himself to the point he has illusions of looking like a white man.
The film pushes some topics, which Schultz drew some criticism. For example, some thought the film exaggerated black stereotypes, and others thought the comedy was cartoonish. Indeed, "Livin' Large" is an interesting movie with an acquired taste, but deep down, there is something one can take from it.

His entire life, Atlanta native Dexter Jackson has dreamt of one thing: breaking into the world of T.V. news. So when, by freak coincidence, he lands a job as Channel 4's "Man About Town," he finally thinks he's made it. But to compete on the ladder of success, Dexter changes his image and sells out his friends on T.V.! Before long, he finds himself shunned and alone and faced with a not-so-black-and-white choice: save his career or soul.
