Shadow of the Thin Man (1941)
It took till this movie to get as morbid as that first movie where the subject is decomposition of a corpse, and the film even addresses a dog’s attraction to putrefying meat.
Gross, no?
In this one we deal with a simple murdered jockey who was gonna turn informant… but check out the scriptwriting on the description of how the bullet entered and travelled thru the body.
Murder mysteries of old didn’t generally go into clinical detail, but for some reason the Thin Man movies sometimes did.
Nick and Nora’s (William Powell and Myrna Loy’s) kid is now already born and taken to walks to the park, and while Nick insist on attempting to pass the 5-10 as a fairy tale, Nick Jr. (Dickie Hall) is not easily fooled.
Also welcome is the focus on drinking with Nick telepathically let known that drinks are ready and waiting for him at home. A traffic cop knows Nick, but also every cop and reporter at the racetrack, then later at a wrestling match, etc.
Yeah, we like the couple’s chemistry, but these are also important ingredients in their movies’ appeal.
Barry Nelson, Louise Beavers, Donna Reed, Sam Levene, Alan Baxter and Tor “Time for go to bed” Johnson.
