On this date, May 21st, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall got married (May 21, 1945 - Jan. 14, 1957). Their wedding took place at a friend's farm in Lucas, Ohio. The two first met while filming,"To Have and To Have Not" (1944). Their son, Stephen Bogart, was born in January of 1949 and daughter Leslie Howard Bogart was born in August of 1952. Stephen is a writer, producer and a businessman. Leslie was a registered nurse in the 1970's through the early1980's and later became a yoga instructor. Stephen said of their parents: "Everyone could see their love right there on celluloid. He was the great love of her life, and she his."
The couple co-starred in 5 films: "To Have and Have Not" (1944), "The Big Sleep" (1946), "Dark Passage" (1947), "Key Largo" (1948), "Two Guys from Milwaukee" (1946). They had very successful individual careers as well. Sadly, Humphrey Bogart died of cancer in 1957. Devastated by his death, Lauren Bacall said of their years together, "No one has ever written a romance better than we lived it." At his funeral, she put a whistle in his coffin. It was a reference to the famous line she says in their first film together, "You know how to whistle, don't you? You just put your lips together and blow". Lauren Bacall died at the age of 89, following a stroke at her New York City home in 2014. She was one of the last surviving stars from Hollywood's Golden Age of cinema. The legacy of both film legends has endured.
