Where does the word soccer come from?
This name came from Oxford University. You see, back in the 1870s, the students there had a fascination with creating abbreviations with the suffix -er, this would become known as “Oxford Er Slang”. Other examples of this include the five pound and ten pound notes (fiver and tenner).
Rugby football became known as “rugger” (rugby+er), whilst association football became “asoccer” (association+er).
Eventually, they dropped the “a” and soccer became a well-known nickname for the sport by the mid-1890s. Although, more people would generally refer to it as football. Keeping things straightforward.
