Sword
Not everyone in the Middle Ages would have been able to afford a sword, but for the men who could, it was a valuable weapon and a symbol of wealth and status.
The cost of an average sword may have been more than the wages earned over six or seven months, leading an individual to opt for a smaller knife or a homemade bow.
Swords varied significantly throughout the medieval period.
Length, shape, and type of edge, dictated whether a sword worked better as a thrusting or slashing weapon.
On the whole, using a sword effectively, required training, especially since they could be so heavy.
Six hundred years ago, an unlucky knight may have fallen into ~ or lost his sword, in a bog filled with peat.
That's one explanation researchers are putting forth after an incredibly well-preserved sword was found in a peat-filled bog near the town of HrubieszĆ³w, Poland in 2017.
This 14th century sword measured 47 inches long, and weighed 3.3 pounds.
The two-handed weapon is a unique find in the region but 600 years ago, it would have been a typical weapon for knights.
The rear bar of the sword features an isosceles cross inscribed inside the shape of a heraldic shield, which was probably made by the blacksmith.
Aside from the hilt, the sword had been preserved almost entirely, and has since been donated to the local Stanislaw Staszic Museum.
