*Suzanne Lorraine Burce (later Jane Powell) began dance lessons when she was 2 years old. By age 5,Suzanne had appeared on the Portland children's radio program Stars of Tomorrow. In 1943, Suzanne won a Hollywood talent show and signed a contract with MGM Theaters in Hollywood at the age of 14.She wanted to go back to high school and to university, but her mother forbade this as she was the only one making good money.
*She got stage name Jane Powell from her first film, Song of the Open Road (1944), where she played the character of Jane Powell.Powell sang several songs in the film and made such an impression that MGM signed her to a contract to make a number of musical comedies for them, through the mid-1950s.Her co star who also comedian W.C Fields often made fun of singers and singing in general, but he had a fondness for the promising young singer Jane Powell and even referred to her as "little Janie Powell".
*She performed with Elizabeth Taylor in A Date With Judy in 1948.The film features the soprano singing voice of young Jane Powell, and is also a showcase for the musical performances of the Brazilian singer Carmen Miranda and bandleader Xavier Cugat.
*Jane Powell's off-screen romance with actor Gene Nelson in Three Sailors and A Girl (1953) ended her marriage, but Nelson's wife refused to give him a divorce. Decades later, Nelson directed Powell in a segment of the made-for-TV anthology movie The Letters (1973).
*She became Howard Keel's bride in film Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) that won the Academy Award for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture and was nominated for four additional awards, including Best Picture.She and Howard Keel would later reprise their roles in a Seven Brides for Seven Brothers stage adaptation in 1978.
*Powell replaced June Allyson and Judy Garland for a leading role Ellen Bowen in Royal Wedding (1951) opposite Fred Astaire, after June became pregnant and Judy be fired.
*Powell married and divorced twice before falling for former child-star Dickie Moore in 1982 and marrying him in 1988.The two first met when Moore interviewed Powell for Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.
