Trivia of Ida Lupino (4 February 1918 - 3 August 1995)
*Ida Lupino was born at London, to actress Connie O'Shea (also known as Connie Emerald) and music hall comedian Stanley Lupino.Her father built a backyard theatre and her sister Rita (1921–2016), who also became an actress and dancer.Ida Lupino also cousin of actor Richard Lupino and Lauri Lupino Lane.
*She wrote her first play at age seven and toured with a travelling theatre company as a child.By the age of ten, Lupino had memorised the leading female roles in each of Shakespeare's plays.She wanted to be a writer, but in order to please her father, Lupino enrolled in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She excelled in a number of "bad girl" film roles, often playing prostitutes.Lupino did not enjoy being an actress and felt uncomfortable with many of the early roles she was given.
*Ida Lupino's first contract came in 1932 after she made her debut in British film 'Her First Affairs'. In 1934 young Ida Lupino went to Hollywood where she played minor roles in 'Peter Ibbetson (1935)' along Gary Cooper.
*She replaced Bette Davis for a leading role after Bette turned down.The result was Ida Lupino's perform as Mrs Helen Chernen won the New York Film Critics Award for Best Actress of 1943 for her performance in the film.Upon seeing the result, Bette mused, "How did I let that one get away?".
*Her biggest breakthrough came in 1939 when she stirred a major role in The Light That Failed.Reported Lupino was so anxious to play in this film, that she stole a copy of the script and stormed into director William Wellman's office demanding a chance to audition. She convinced Wellman but not co-star Colman, who wanted Vivien Leigh to play the role. Because Wellman held out for Lupino, the actor unsuccessfully tried to have him replaced. The actor and director maintained a chilly relationship on the set.
*When Ida Lupino found herself unable to cry during final scene in film High Sierra (1940), co-star Humphrey Bogart coaxed her into it by telling her, "Listen, doll, if you can't cry, I'm going to take the picture away from you." Despite this, Lupino disliked Bogart's verbal treatment of her, and refused to accept another co-starring role with him in Out of the Fog (1941). He was replaced by John Garfield.
*Her first directing job came when director Elmer Clifton fell ill on a script that she co-wrote Not Wanted (1949).As a film director, Ida directed several television shows : The Untouchables (1959) and The Fugitive (1963), Batman (1968), The Mod Squad (1969), Police Woman (1975), Charlie's Angels (1977).
