The Museum

The Museum at Eldridge St or the Elderidge St Synagogue is a historic synagogue located in what was the Lower East Side and today is Chinatown. It was the first Synagogue in NYC built by Eastern European Jews in 1887. It was not only a synagogue but place where immigrants could get help. In its heyday 800-1000 worshippers would come here. As the jewish population moved, the synagogue membership dwidled and a ,leak occured in the roof in the 1950's and the upstairs was closed and a smaller congregation stayed downstairs. Beginning in 1986 and until 2007, A foundation was formed and $20 Million was raised and the synagogue was restored to its former glory and is mostly a museum today.
