Donna Drake
Donna Drake was an African American actress born Eunice Westmoreland in 1914 in Florida. Her grandparents were African American. Drake’s big break came when she was discovered while performing in a night club. She was given a small role in a motion picture film. Later she was offered a contract from Paramount Pictures. Due to her features and dark curly hair, producers cast her in ethnic character roles playing a native, middle eastern or gypsy. She had over 30 roles over a 20 year time span. Unfortunately, Paramount Studios, created a false narrative about her ancestry. It was reported that she was born Rita Novella in 1920 in Mexico City, allowing people to believe she was of Mexican heritage which is further from the truth.
