The Mayan Theater in Denver
The Mayan Theater in Denver
The landmark Mayan Theatre was built in 1930, at the end of the construction of grand Art Deco palaces.
The theater adopted the rare Mayan Revival style.
Designed by Montana Fallis with the aid of local artisans, sculptor Julius Ambrusch and even Victor Hornbein who worked for Fallis at the time.
It is one of three remaining theatres designed in the Art Deco Mayan Revival style.
Mayan Revival is a modern architectural style popular in the Americas during the 1920s and 1930s that drew inspiration from the architecture and iconography of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures.
The stock market crash put an end to the construction
of Art Deco film theaters and time has taken away most of them.
In the mid-1980s, the theatre was saved from demolition. It was restored and converted into a three-screen movie theatre.
