Béla Lugosi
Hollywood legend, Hungarian-American actor Béla Lugosi, best known for his famous portrayal of “Count Dracula” in the iconic Pre-Code horror movie ‘Dracula’, is pictured here at his home in Los Angeles, California. Produced at Universal studios, Tod Browning’s Pre-Code classic horror movie adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel ‘Dracula’ (1931), also starred one of Pre-Code Hollywood’s most popular leading men, Canadian actor David Manners as “John Harker”, popular Pre-Code actress Helen Chandler, who is best known for her portrayal of “Mina Seward” in this movie, Dwight Frye as “Renfield”, who also performed in the Pre-Code Universal Studio’s other Pre-Code horror horror movies ‘Frankenstein’ (1931) as “Fritz”, and as a reporter in ‘The Invisible Man’ (1933), and Edward Van Sloan as “Van Helsing”, who also appeared in the other Universal’s Pre-Code horror movies, ‘Frankenstein’ (1931) as “Dr. Waldman”, and in “The Mummy” (1932) as ”Dr. Muller”. Béla Lugosi moved around quite a bit, and I don’t know which house this is. I’m guessing it’s one of his early houses. Besides living during his early years in Hollywood at The Ambassador Hotel and The Hollywood Athletic Club, he then lived at fourteen other locations in Los Angeles during his time there: 1146 North Hudson (Hollywood), 2745 Creston Drive (Hollywood), 6382 Hollywood Boulevard (Hollywood), 6521 Sunset Boulevard, 2829 Westshire Drive, the house next door at 2835 Westshire Drive, 3515 South La Brea, 2227 Outpost Drive, 3714 Lankershim Boulevard (North Hollywood), 10841 Whipple Street (North Hollywood), 4601 Rodeo Lane, Apartment 1 (Baldwin Hills), 1427 North Laurel Avenue, Apartment 2, 1532 North Serrano, and finally at 5620 Harold Way Hollywood), which I believe was featured in his last movie, Ed Wood’s ‘Plan 9 From Outer Space’ (1957). If anyone knows which location this house is or was at I would really appreciate getting that information.
