Death Of Anthony Woodville ~ 2nd Earl Rivers
.
Anthony Woodville, was an English nobleman, courtier, writer, and a leading supporter of his brother-in-law, the Yorkist king Edward IV
Anthony was the son of Jacquetta of Luxembourg, and Richard Woodville~1st Earl Rivers, and also the brother of Queen Elizabeth Woodville, who married King Edward IV.
Anthony was one of the leading members of the Woodville family, which came to prominence during the reign of King Edward IV.
He married twice, but never had any legitimate children.
By his mistress Gwenlina Stradling, however, he had one illegitimate daughter named Margaret.
When King Edward died suddenly in 1483, things started to go wrong for the Woodvilles.
The Son's of Edward and Elizabeth, 12-year-old Edward and his younger brother Richard, Duke of York, were left to the care of Edward IV’s brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester.
Anthony was ordered by his sister to bring her son, the Prince of Wales, now King Edward V, straight back to London under an armed guard.
They were intercepted by Richard, Duke of Gloucester, later King Richard III, who arrested Anthony, along with his nephew, Sir Richard Grey, the young king's half-brother.
Richard was acting as the regent for the young King Edward V, and had Anthony arrested, for alleged treasonable activities.
Anthony Rivers was imprisoned, and then b~headed at Pontefract Castle, on 25th June 1483, as part of Richard's path towards kingship.
Anthony was buried at All Saints Churchyard, Pontefract, Metropolitan Borough of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England.
Sadly, his tomb was destroyed during the English Civil War.
