Tȟatȟáŋka Waŋžíla
Tȟatȟáŋka Waŋžíla, also known as Henry Oscar One Bull was a Lakota warrior best known for being the nephew and adopted son of Sitting Bull who fought at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
One Bull was related to many great names. His mother was Sitting Bull's sister - Good Feather. His father was chief Makes Room and his brother was White Bull. One Bull was adopted by Sitting Bull at the age of four, who gifted him a pinto horse which quickly bonded with One Bull. The pony became the swiftest horse in the camp, envied by all. One Bull fought at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. After escorting his mother to safety, he joined the fight, killing several troopers in battle. One Bull joined his uncle and his brother in fleeing to Canada following the victory at Little Bighorn. During the murder of Sitting Bull, One Bull's pregnant wife, Red Whirlwind, was in Sitting Bull's cabin. After hearing the gunshots he rushed into the cabin, and managed to save his wife. Following the death of Sitting Bull, One Bull reported that all of his personal household goods and some of his horses were taken. He and his brother White Bull were significant contributors to Stanley Vestal's biography of their uncle.
This post is largely a repost of one of my earliest publications which was shown to a significantly smaller audience, since I didn't have nearly as much followers back then. I thought I should publish it again, as it's centered around a very important figure in Native American and American history.
