Ready, Willing and Able

"Ready, Willing and Able" 1937 directed by Ray Enright, written by Jerry Wald, Sig Herzig, and Warren Duff for Warner Brothers.

Ruby Keeler, Lee Dixon, Louise Fazenda, Ross Alexander, Carol Hughes, Hugh O'Connell, Wini Shaw, Teddy Hart, Addison Richards.
"Final film of Ross Alexander. NOTE: He committed suicide two months before this film was released. Because of this event, Warners eliminated his name from the above title credits, substituted that of Lee Dixon--who actually had little more to do than to serve as Ruby Keeler's dancing partner in an otherwise subordinate role--and relegated Alexander's credit to that of a member of the supporting cast, even though he played the leading male role, and Keeler's romantic lead. Reportedly, James Newill dubbed Alexander's singing voice." according to IMDB, but John Nevik tells me that billing is never changed when someone dies and that Wikipedia and IMDB are full of inaccuracies. So, although it is said that Charles Emmett Mack's billing was lowered at the time of his death, John Nevik, who has worked in the industry say it is false. With this film, Lee Dixon was in a big production number with Ruby Keeler, but Ross Alexander was the romantic lead with more screen time. Logically, he ought to have been billed as first male.
