Beverly and Kathryn Hays

Beverly and Kathryn Hays review the script before filming a scene for their guest starring roles on the NBC-TV dramatic series THE ELEVENTH HOUR. The series dealt with the role of psychiatry in helping people in their "eleventh hour" when they were on the verge of a mental breakdown. Jack Ging and Ralph Bellamy starred in the series as doctors aiding these people in their time of crisis. Beverly's episode, "What Did She Mean By Good Luck?," was a bold venture when it aired on November 13, 1963. It dealt with lesbian tendencies. Beverly played Marya Stone, an envious, resentful Broadway theatrical director. Marya and the play's leading lady Hallie Lambert (Kathryn Hays) are both pursuing the same man. The hypersensitive Hallie believes Marta hates her and is persecuting her -criticizing her every move on stage and off. When Dr. Starke (Ralph Bellamy) treats the unstable actress, he determines Hallie has lesbian tendencies and is actually in love with Marya - channeling her confusion into hostility. The cause of these tendencies? Hallie's overbearing mother (Doris Dowling). The show created a bit of a stir when it originally aired. Lesbian tendencies were rarely discussed on television at the time. But it did provide Beverly with a fascinating character. And Beverly never shied away from giving the best performance possible - no matter the topic!
