The Ghost and Mrs. Muir

**"The Ghost and Mrs. Muir"**

This is a 1947 American fantasy film. Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and based on a book by Josephine Leslie, it stars Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison.
Defying her in laws, recently widowed Lucy Muir, played by Gene Tierney, leaves London and moves away for a quieter life with her young daughter, to a secluded, picturesque seaside cottage, which has a reputation for being haunted. Lucy discovers that the cottage is indeed haunted by the ghost of the deceased former owner, roguish sea Captain Daniel Gregg, played by Rex Harrison. She gathers the courage to face up to him, and they become friends. Faced with dwindling means of support, she agrees to write the Captain's colourful life story and they fall in love, whilst realising the hopelessness of their situation.
With a moving score by Bernard Herrmann, this is a charming tale of two lost and lonely souls, in one of the great on screen romances. The brilliant cinematography creates a very atmospheric feel. With understated, poignant performances by Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison, this is an old fashioned romance thoughtfully told, at times funny, at times achingly sad. With excellent support from a great cast including George Sanders, Edna Best, Vanessa Brown, Anna Lee and a young Natalie Wood.
