SHE WAS GLAD HE WAS HOME

SHE WAS GLAD HE WAS HOME—BUT COULDN’T TELL HIM.

This portrait shows Scarlett in the elaborate dressing gown she wears when Rhett and Bonnie return from London. The same staircase pose exists in a vintage photograph of Vivien Leigh, although the artist or colorist behind this version hasn’t been confirmed.

In the film, Scarlett is pregnant, and the homecoming quickly turns painful. Rhett announces he intends to leave again, and bitter words lead to the argument before her tragic fall down the stairs.

Later, Scarlett admits she had been glad to see him. That makes this reunion especially heartbreaking: she wanted him there, but neither could get past the hurt long enough to reach the other.

What do you wish Scarlett—or Rhett—had said differently?
